A link farm is basically a group of sites that hyperlink to all the other sites in the group regardless of niche. They are perceived as spamming the search engines. If you can select related websites within a group and do it more manually than the link farms, this would not be considered spamming.

A link farm on the World Wide Web, is any group of sites that all hyperlink to every other website in the group to increase search engine optimization. In theory, the more websites that link to yours, the higher your ranking in the search engine results will be because the more links indicate a higher level of popularity among online users. However, search engines like Google consider link farming as a form of spam and have been implementing procedures to banish websites that participate in link farming, so the term link farming has garnered negative connotations across the Internet.

The natural search rank of your website is determined in large part by link popularity - defined as how many well ranked pages on other websites link to yours. Link analysis has been gaining more importance to the search engines, not less. Search engines are looking at the quality and relevance of links from ranked pages that point to your website as opposed to just the number of inbound links (i.e. link farms). A high quality link comes from a website that has a high page rank, although any site with a Google PageRank of 0/10 or above is considered beneficial. Usually, a link farm site will NOT meet this criteria.
