Of course it is good for SEO point of view to put relevant keywords on your web page because when search engine crawlers visits your website these meta tags come across in crawlers contact and search engine bots detect that keywords are relevant to page information.
Though meta keywords tags are not a major factor search engines consider when ranking sites, they should not be left off the page. Both the meta keywords tag and the meta description tag contribute to your search engine ranking. A meta keywords tag is supposed to be a brief and concise list of the most important themes of your page. The meta keywords tag takes the following form:
When you write a meta keywords list, start by scanning the copy on your page. Make a list of the most important terms you see on the page. Then read through the list. Pick the 10 or 15 terms that most accurately describe the content of the page. If you can't narrow your keyword list down to 10-15 keywords, then the content on your page may be rambling to far.

yes these are important, because if you dont include them then how can you rank in search engines. and how would you know about your positions in SERPs.
Thank you for the above info.
SEO is a new subject to me, but I have bought two good books on the subect and done quite a lot of reading recently. It is still a very steep learning curve though.
On the subject of keyword meta tags, "nichesuite" says that the list should be 10 to 15 words long. I have recently started seo'ing category pages on an E-commerce site and I have probably gone slightly overboard with one list already 22 keywords long !
Would I be penalised by search engines for that ? Is it simply counter-productive and should I narrow it down a bit ?
My problem is knowing if I should account for variations in spellling (eg. men's shoes, men shoe, sport shoes, sports shoes etc...). Of course the site's content only uses one form of spelling.
Is it safe to assume that Google will recognise the different permutations in spelling ? If so, I could reduce the length of my keyword list.
Yes, Meta keyword is always important for search engine. the first being that some search engines use the contents of the keywords and description tags to determine the content of the page. The Meta keywords tag takes the following form:
<meta name="keywords" content="keywords, keyword, keyword phrase, etc.">
The keywords you choose are used to show your ads to your customers. Selecting high quality, relevant keywords for your advertising campaign can help you reach the customers you want, when you want.
Imagine you're craving a hamburger. You head to a restaurant, and see that the items on the menu are "Food" and "Meat in between bread." Even if this restaurant served the best burger in town, you might leave without ordering anything. They'd lose your business -- simply because the words they used weren't the same words you had in mind.
To get your ads to appear when people search for your product or service, the keywords you choose need to match the words or phrases that people use, or should be related to the content of the websites your customers visit.
