How important is W3C validation?

Having spent many hours trying to remove validation errors, I thought I would just have a look at a couple of my competitors who rank higher than me on Google for my keywords. One had 70 errors, the other around 150, and I had just a few. Its good to have a tidy site but I am wondering whether these errors actually really matter?
