301 redirect mystery

Marshall Browne Registered Users
Hello,

I have done much reading and research and I am amazed that I have never found anything that talked about the following questions regarding a 301 redirect. This is regarding a site that has different content than the site it is being redirected to but 97% identical in relevancy.

1. W
hat happens to the site that is redirected? Do you still maintain it and optimize the keywords, etc.?

2. Does the website or page that is being redirected still appear in google results? if so for how long?

3. What happens to the content of the
redirected site? Does it get added to the new site somehow? Can its content be seen anywhere? Do the files from it show up on the new site somewhere? Do I have to move the content to the base site little by little?

4. Do the incoming links of the redirected site eventually automatically get transfered to the base site over time?

5. If I cancel the 301 a year later say because I want to use the domain for something different , what happens to the redirected site? Is it considered a new domain with no PR, age , etc.?

These seem like extremely important questions nobody talks about. (at least the discussions have avoided me!) Can anyone help?

Thanks

Thanks Marshal for such a good question.

As per my knowledge i am giving the answers of your questions:

    1. When anyone redirected the site to other then it is not necessary to maintain and optimize the keywords. Just keep in mind that domin will be live and htaccess file working properly even it will not have any page.

    2. Yes the pages are shown by google. Now its upto you if you want want to display the old page then its ok otherwise remove them from search by google webmaster's URL removal tool.

    3. Again its your choice that you want to keep the old content or want to remove. If you want to keep it then just keep it in new site and delete the old page content.

    4. yes

    5. The redirected site works as it was working in the pas if you didn't make any changes in it. It will not considered as a new domain, The domain age will be the same. And the PR is totally depends on the quality work and back-links that you had made in the past for the redirected domain. It may increase or decrease depending on the conditions.

Hope you will get your answers.
