Anchor text is the most basic yet misunderstood feature of SEO.It is a piece of text that is used to describe a link. Hence, instead of distributing a long and unattractive text link that contains an whole URL, you can easily use anchor text to name the link whatever you’d like. The normal site visitor is much more likely to click on a piece of anchor text, rather than a 50 character long unattractive URL.
Google (and to a lesser degree other search engines) heavily weight it’s Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) towards the anchor text of links to a page. This can be demonstrated by looking at extreme examples where a pages high ranking can ONLY be attributed to anchor text and no other SEO factors. Googlebombs are probably the easiest examples to find and understand how anchor text effects SERPs.
