I think the type of site might determine which form of traffic works best or if it even has an relevance.

For example a company producing gears for a clock maker likely will benefit more from a manufacturing forum than Facebook which is geared socially.

Seems the only benefit in that case would be from the backlink, but even then it would be of low relevance compared to a link from the industry forum.
