  The purpose of sitemap is to getting your Webpages into the Google index. The search results provided by Google are from their index. Since 85% of the Internet happens as the result of a Google search, being well indexed can be a good thing.

  Just another thought... having a site map does not guarantee that Google will index your site, but in reality it probably does help you get indexed faster.
  
  On good way to help a new site get indexed is through DIGG. DIGG is a social bookmarking site that Google seems to really follow closely.

  There are two types of sitemap one for users and another one for Search engines.
  
  1. HTML Sitemap (Users)
  2. XML Sitemap (Search Engines)

  Site maps are used to display the pages which can be used by the users or the Search engine bots.It is generally represented in a hierarchical manner. It can be a document of any format.Generally XML site maps are used for the web sites.They help to increase the quality of that page and thus the PR of the site.

  A sitemap would basicly be a page with links to your whole site.meaning if a search bot hits that page is can effectivelly crawl every page of your site.
