You can check how your site performs by visiting the w3.org site (not sure if I can post the link so just Google it). Enter your url and a check is made on your site with explanations of any errors found. The idea is that all people should have access to the web and that includes people with visual impairments like the reply above mentioning alt tags. Alt tags aren't just meant to be click here - they are meant to be descriptive for people who don't have images shown in their browsers. It is believed that Google rates your site higher if it is more W3 friendly :)
It is a waste of time... Use the validator as told above on ANY big site: none of them will validate. Why? Because not one browser follows ALL the rules of the W3C, so even if your site validates, it will NOT work correctly on ALL browsers. To get it to work properly on all browsers, you have to "tune" your code, and this will break the W3C rules... However, validating your site will show you most of your mistakes. Use it. When done, check your iste on IE, FF, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Correct your code to adapt it to all of these. (You will now fail the validation). So, what's more important? All browsers ok and no validation, or validated and just a few browsers and a non-working site on many? Your choice!

A common mistake is forgetting to give images alt tags.
