Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeIf you have a website from a boring industry that really lacks editorial value, and all of the sudden you have a 1000 links in a month many of them high PR, then that could raise a flag with Google and activate all sort of webspam filters.
So instead of giving some generic percentage, you need to find out more about your client's website, your industry, and your successful competition.

Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeDefinitely.
But Google does not have a list of 'boring industries' and the list above talks about percentages as opposed to numbers... numbers would be even worse!
SPAM triggers 'SPAM filters' - good SEO does not. (Should not :-) )

Off Topic Disagree Agree Like@alan: Thanks for adding another two techniques. That would help people to know more about techniques.
@asefati: I agree that it depends upon the type of industry. But my idea was to get a view regarding the use of techniques and how people balance their techniques to get back links. I've seen people constantly involved in link exchange and doing nothing. Some are totally into articles and directories. :-)
