Link building is a key factor in your sites success. I have been using link building to promote my websites and the result was amazing. Got a page rank 5 after 9 months of hard work. The way i did this i by writing my own articles which were unique and adding link backs to my own website and submitting this article to article directory's. Google loves to see your link wrapped in an article. Here are the websites i used:

8. Forum Signatures. Sign up for some forums in your niche and start contributing to ongoing discussions. Insert a link to the homepage or some inner pages of your site.
9. Create a Tool, Theme or Widget. Pay a designer to come up with an add-on application or template that is related to a specific social network, popular website or platform. Include a credit link that points back to your designated website.
10. Blogs on Other Blog Platforms. Use existing blogs you have on other blog networks. Or set up different versions of your blog on different blog networks like Wordpress.com, Blogger and Xanga.

- social media sites are great spots on the i-net where folks discover and share the yummiest content from all over the web. If you manage to push your story to the top of these sites you're sure to get tons of valuable backlinkls.
My top 4 of social media sites are Digg, StumbleUpon, Del.icio.us, Reddit.
And....To get some more link juice you can also organize contests. You know, people like games and stuff and they are likely to buzz about that to everyone, which in tern means linking to your website.
