  Depends on the directory. Dmoz is a good directory but it takes a long time for you to get enlisted there. Yes, Google gives you google juice for them.

  Be ware of the "nofollow" tag though, you could get a back link from some blogs or postings, the link you might and could be useful, but the "nofollow" tag is no good for SEO.

  Submit to SEO friendly Link Submission Sites like www.linkclick.org. You can find a the list of directories at http://www.directorycritic.com/
  
  This is one of the alternative. Another one is to submit articles, press release, bookmarking etc.

  If its on a single website then the link value is decreasing from each post, so it is better to get links from different websites for quality link juice.

  1. Write related articles at articles submission websites.
  
  2. Submit your website to major directories.
  
  3. start a blog and put your website's link on it.
  
  and the toughest but most effective one..
  
  4. write good quality content so that other people quote you.
