Google is known to look at these factors when ranking a webpage –
1.Number & the quality of the links from other sites
    2.Anchor text of the links
    3.Historical factors

You need to increase backlinks for your website, if you will keep increasing you will get good PR.

Why all of you post the same thing? And why some of you agree that the number of visitors helps the pr. Are you so bored?

Let's imagine this. I have a website, and the homepage is a blank page. Ok ? Well, as you said, if I do a commercial on tv, and from the next day I get 100.000 visitors ... what ? In six month I get pr 5, with a blank page?

You really don't know anything about seo.
I won't tell you the basics seo, but you know how important for your site is a blog? Do you know how important is a youtube video related to your website?

I've read other topic, and some 'seo expert' was asking about the number of backlinks that he needs to create daily. Come on, this is very very wrong.
The good sites will always survive, and backlinks will come natural, without even bothering.
So, don't waste time searching stupid backlinks, trafic exchange and other stuff. Just do your job and create original content. And believe me, your site will grow.

I almost forgot, my site has 17.000 unique visitors/day, and I still have page rank 2, for more than a year.

Update your site regularly – Add new pages and create interactive pages, such as blog posts on the site that encourage comments and linking to that page from outside sites (such as bookmarking sites, microblogs, etcetera.)

Prashant Page Rank doesn't depends on visitors..it is depend on Link ratio and Quality content...and No of visitors means that the content is informative for visitors so google sending them...hope you know that...

    1. PageRank is only one of numerous methods Google uses to determine a page’s relevance or importance.
    2. Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. Google looks not only at the sheer volume of votes; among 100 other aspects it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. However, these aspects don’t count, when PageRank is calculated.
    3. PageRank is based on incoming links, but not just on the number of them – relevance and quality are important (in terms of the PageRank of sites, which link to a given site).
    4. PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + … + PR(tn)/C(tn)). That’s the equation that calculates a page’s PageRank.
    5. Not all links weight the same when it comes to PR.
    6. If you had a web page with a PR8 and had 1 link on it, the site linked to would get a fair amount of PR value. But, if you had 100 links on that page, each individual link would only get a fraction of the value.
    7. Bad incoming links don’t have impact on Page Rank.
    8. Ranking popularity considers site age, backlink relevancy and backlink duration. PageRank doesn’t.
    9. Content is not taken into account when PageRank is calculated.
    10. PageRank does not rank web sites as a whole, but is determined for each page individually.
    11. Each inbound link is important to the overall total. Except banned sites, which don’t count.
    12. PageRank values don’t range from 0 to 10. PageRank is a floating-point number.
    13. Each Page Rank level is progressively harder to reach. PageRank is believed to be calculated on a logarithmic scale.
    14. Google calculates pages PRs permanently, but we see the update once every few months (Google Toolbar).
A link from PR5 page is much better than hundreds of links from PR 0 pages. Quality of incoming links matter a lot for PR.

i think , backlinks...if you have perticular number of backlinks ..you will have better PR..so its only backlinks..but PR has nothing to with SERP...even high PR websites stands lower in search engines results

    1. Update your site regularly – Add new pages and create interactive pages, such as blog spot on the site that encourage comments and linking to that page from outside sites (such as bookmarking sites, microblogs, etcetera.)2. Link to your website from other sites – This could include email signatures, forum signatures, profile sites, from blog comment , article directories, press release sites, and so on. Link to more than just the home page. Link to various pages within your site.3. Give away content – Submit to article directories and put links back to your site within your resource box . Make that article available for syndication so other websites will publish the article. By doing that, they’ll link back to your site from their site and this is read by Google as a popularity vote for your site. More votes = better rankings.4. Link to authority sites from your site – If you have a PageRank of 1 and you know of a site that has a higher rank in your industry, it could make sense to link to that site. You can do this in blog posts, resources pages, a linkroll, and so on. You’ll want to make sure you’re not sending your customers and prospects to a competitor of course, but authority sites could add credibility to your site. Sites that could be considered good authorities could include sites with .gov or .edu extensions. A Wikipedia link to explain terminology is a good example of linking to an authority page. Tip: set the link to open in a new window so that if your visitors click the authority links, they’re not leaving your webpage to do so.5. Write link bait – link bait articles (such as top ten lists or articles that offer breaking news, etc.) can become popular quickly and encourage others to link. Each of those links equates to a popularity vote and this could quickly improve your PageRank.

The most obvious solution will be to get as many incoming links as you can, while shutting down your site and not linking to anyone else. Wikipedia is one example of such closed system, as every outgoing link on WikiPedia is 'nofollow'.
However things are not as easy, as Google has tweaked their algorithm over the years and in effort to fight those kind of Page Rank conservation they have probably invented numerous algorithms to detect and even punish such sites.
Other 'white hat' techniques like 'page rank sculpting' allow you to flow the page rank juice to the areas of your site where you want them most.
