Hello All
I have little bit confusion about sitemap.
I know only two types of sitemap html and XML. But some people says these are not types of sitemap. These are extensions of sitemap.
Then what are the types of sitemap?
HTML sitemap is used to list all hyperlinks of different sections and pages of your blog/website.It will help your visitors navigate and find information easily.
So HTML sitemap is primarily created for humans. The XML sitemap protocol is specifically for spiders.Search engines(Google, Yahoo,Bing...) just love XML. Common users can't understand XML site-maps
There are 2 types of the sitemaps:
1. HTML sitemap: It helps visitors to know about the website navigation
2. XML sitemap: It helps to search engine crawler to know about the updated pages of the websites.

2. XML sitemap: It helps to search engine crawler to know about the updated pages of the websites.
There's only two types commonly in use, which would be
Normal HTML site maps, which are mainly used by visitors and dumb crawlers.
Flash or other nifty sitemaps, which may look neater, but are usually useless to crawlers.
XML sitemap which Google uses to index websites. These have been adopted by a fair number of search engines (MSN, Yahoo, Ask.com) and are thus something most approaching a standard.
ROR sitemap, another XML-based standard, with a rather poor adoption.
Sitemaps, as the name implies, are just a map of your site. i.e. on one single page you can show the structure of your site, its sections, the links between them, etc. They can be categorised into 2 types:
-HTML Sitemap
-XML Sitemap

[TD="class: alt1"] There are two types of sitemaps: xml sitemap (for search engines) and html sitemap (for visitors).
An XML sitemap:
- Ensures better visibility by search engines
- Enables you to rely less on external links that will bring search engines to your site.
- Helps with broken internal links or orphaned pages that cannot be reached in other way
- Alerts search engines to any changes/additions to your site
- Helps you choose pages that you dont want to index
An HTML sitemap:
- Ensures improved search and navigation by human visitors
- Improves user experience thereby reducing bounce rate
- Helps you distribute links to various pages of the website
