  Both are important. Directory submission will get you number of backlinks, where, Article submission will give you quality backlinks and anchor text links on specific keywords. However, comparing both of these one should give preference on Article submission.

  I would also say Article submittion is more important, more quality; meanwhile directory submittion will go more towards quantity. Eventhough there is some people who says article submitiion will no longer be as powerfull as its been for now.

  Article Submission will definitely give more weight but Directory submission is also a big help, and it shouldn't be ignored. You can find good directories all over the net. If you can try both, then you can see a much better result.

  Article Submission is much better than directory submission as it is updated and crawl by SE's more faster. Google gives more importance to articles. Article submission will help in getting more referral traffic along with search engines traffic but directory will only help in getting backlink counts and Search engines traffic.

  Definitely article submisson. It could give you qualitied link with specific anchor text, while you could get extra traffic if you are good at writing. I think you could do both of them in the same time

  I definitely agree with the comments that say you should use both. Directory listings are usually easy links, the sort of thing you should be doing at the beginning of a campaign. Higher PR links are harder to develop and often involve building relationships which can end with guest blogs which are excellent. The article directories definitely make a difference, depending on the competitiveness of the keyword your targeting in the article I've seen this make big gains just by submitting one article to many sites. Overall, your strategy to should involve a variety of link building methods.
  
  Doing so will give you a natural link profile to your website over a wide array of domains. Remember not to just build links through keywords. IF your link profile has too many 'perfect' links, it will be flagged. I will sometimes build links with 'read more' or 'www.mydomain.com' to help build a more natural link profile. I've found that this works very well.

  It is depend on your skills because of article and directory do different in search engine optimization so If you are looking for a natural traffic and permanent back-links then you should submit article submission.

  If i need to choose one between two.. i will go for Article Submission ... For better results with article submission always use human edited spin version for each directory you are submitting.. Use spin for both Title and complete Content.
