Hi all
From all the reading I have done, it would seem that there are 2 reasons that Google may penalise you or ban you in their search results:
1. If they found out that you are buying links from other websites.
2. If you use onsite blackhat techniques like cloaking, mirror sites etc.
Am I right? Are there other reasons that Google may ban or penalise you? does anyone have experience of this happening to them that they would be willing to share.
I believe it is important to me to draw a distinct line between white hat and black hat techniques and look forward to other peoples observations.

Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeWhat CAN get you banned is a totally un-natural linking profile, but the original poster kind of covered that in his statement about buying links in the first place.
In reality, there is a lot that could get you de-indexed from Google, but if you ask yourself one question "does it feel right to do this?" and you can honestly answer that positively, you will be alright.

Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeSomeone mentioned "bad neighbourhoods" - so the question is - how do you know if something is a "bad neighbourhood" - you could just be busy posting on forums and unwittingly end up with links from bad neighbourhoods, couldn't you? Does Google give a definition??

Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeI'm not aware of any firm definition, but a surefire way to establish is to check if a website ranks for its domain name. For instance, to check this site you would search google for "seoforums.org" (without the quotes).
If you do that, and the domain does NOT appear, it's one of two things - either
a) its spam, and you shouldnt be interested, or
b) its so new its not even indexed, so again, you shouldnt be interested.

Off Topic Disagree Agree LikeI have spoken to google about this in the past, and am assured that the remaining time left on a domain registration plays no part in any ranking algo.
On the other hand, there is some correlative studies that indicate that older domains have some seniority, which led to a big rush to buy up old domains a few years ago (I did as well at the time, so Ive got a few that are 10/12 years old in my godaddy account).
I now beleive that an aged domain does not help in rankings, once its surpassed certain amounts of time with an active website, probably 12 months...
