Google is not the greatest site in the world. That would be either wikipedia, or MIT, CERN, possibly NASA.... maybe W3. I'm sure someone else can add a fer great ones to this list. Google isn't on it. They don't even give the most accurate web returns IMO. They do offer helpful information to the novice webmaster. But, anything they offer has an alterior motive in it. They 'give' things away to get you to go to their site so they may track you. Then they go ahead and sell your psyche to the highest bidder(who happens to be auto mfg, pharmacuticals, lawyers).

I disagree that MIT and the rest are better than Google. They only serve content in their niche. NASA doesn't give you information on SEO for example. Wikipedia is a really good site I have to admit.
While Google doesn't have any content, it is a window to the world and allows you to find the content you are looking for. It may not be perfect with its search results but it is still the best search engine out there. It's not for nothign that it is consistently number 1 ahead of Yahoo and Bing.
Regarding its privacy policy, I tend to agree with you but then there is no such thing as a free lunch and if you don't accept their policy, don't use it.
You've been to MiT open course ware and you like google better? OK, to each his own. If computer science, engineering, architecture, humanities, & mathematics all lumped together constitutes a "niche" that's your opinion and a very diverse niche.
I think this is questionable "NASA doesn't give you information on SEO for example", have you ever right click view source on nasa.gov? Brill. I've gotten many coding ideas from nasa.
Google... "and allows you to find the content you are looking for"
I disagree. Googles delivery is much less precise than yahoo's. Here is an example... type "how to index a website" into google and see how quickly the returns deteriorate. Same query on yahoo returns with deeper coherence. There are many examples of this.
"While Google doesn't have any content" Google has tons of original content, consider labs dot google... but, it's all self serving apparati.
"if you don't accept their policy, don't use it" I personally don't care what goog does with my info, and i know they use it... But for the novice surfer who does care about information sharing, fuzzy policies buried behind a maze of linkage is not the mark of a forthright company.
This is an emminently debatable topic and all my words are merely opinion. I like google too. They probably add to the overall quality of the web in a positive way.
Netometry: OK, my use of 'niche' was too narrow. Field or topic would be a better word. Can you find information about cooking recipes on MIT?
You are quite resourceful to find SEO tips on NASA, I grant you that. But it wasn't NASA that directed me to this forum!
Google is supposed to return better results than Yahoo. I am not speaking from experience here, only repeating what I've read so if you are convinced that Yahoo is better in the way you described, I am happy to believe you. But why did Google overtake yahoo as the better search engine then? Is it because people don't look beyond the first page of results?
I still believe Google doesn't have any original content. It may have loads of useful applications but these are not content or information - just tools. I use Google Analytics for e.g., G email, Adwords, Adsense and so on. Even G News is not content! It merely aggregates news from other sites.
I might be going off-topic here but I read a blog recently about how Google was hijacking other sites' traffic and contents by placing their contents immediately on the first page so users find what they are looking for without having to click on the website. Google's SEO mantra is that you should contribute original content (with penalties for duplicate content) but the irony is that it uses other sites' contents just to be able to do its core function.
In SERPs, Google doesn't approve of sites full of ads (for instance, Adsense) and little original content. Yet what is Google's search results page? Content copied from websites with ads added to the page. Just what Google says it doesn't like.
I am not here to kill off Google; in fact, I quite enjoy its free tools. I only want to put what it does in a different perspective.
According to me google is the best search engine compare to any other search engine. If you search any information, google can give u brief and proper information.
I agree in this that Google is great and better than any search engine and so true that its really a big help and through this we can learn many things.
but actually Google should not be compared and categorized as a website. A web search engine is designed to search for information and/or websites on the world wide web.
Yes, google is one of the greatest resources that allows you to find everything that you want over the internet. Even A simple user like me can use it effectively.
I think Google is greatest search engine respect to all Search Engine. It is not great site. According to me Google is best search engine because my query is end here.
Google is definitely the leading search engine at the moment but I'm finding that more and more it is due to the quality of it's advertisers rather than the quality of it's results.
I can find little difference in Bing & Google in their organic results for my search queries (mostly technical stuff for php etc.) But when I search for something commercial Google definitely has a better selection of sponsored links.
Google is the most popular ans most searchable website in world. Google has world largest database. You can search mostly anything and Google provides Broad results related to your searches. You can get more traffic on your website then other Search Engines. If we consider the results then Bing is best because Bing provides very closest results related to your searches then other Search Engines.
Google is the best and famous search engine in the world.Mostly people like to use Google for the search. When i want to any type information than i search on the google i get many information from Google.
Google is great search engine where you can able to search everything which is relevant to some topic.you can search it from data base of search engine.
Its undoubtable, we all know that google is now a need of humna being, we can't imagine the internet without google. So its really a best website with all aspects.
There are three main Search engine, Yahoo, Bing, Google, But most of the search occur at Google (80%) rest of the search is come at yahoo, Bing, Ask and Alt Vista, Actually Google providing Organic Search which is most relevant according to your query, and functionality of Google is much easier than other search engine. Thanks,
Yes google is affiliated world in so many good ways as there are many mind blowing applications now a days which are attracting millions of people every year.
