Keyword Research and Competitive Analysis

I want to know the best way to find regional keywords. For example If I am optimizing a website for just Los Angeles. So how should I find the keywords in Google Keyword Tool and other keyword research tools.

Should I add “los angeles” in the keyword phrase or I just find keyword phrase without city name.

What is best way for the competitive analysis? How can I use effectively of “inurl”, “intitle” “” etc.

  • Try this tool out for most US cities: http://searchmuffin.com/

its fantastic and I use it all the time.

Also - you can restrict your searches to a given country by adding &cr=[COUNTRYCODE] to the end of the URL, for instance, &cr=gb would be UK searches.
  • You mentioned searchmuffin.com to search any thing in any US city but my question is that when i need to optimize a website in just Los Angeles so I need to know that how this search engine help me to find suitable keyword to los angeles market because most results are same in simple Google search also.

What should be the way of my search? For example

“bmw mechanic” or “ bmw mechanic in los angeles”

So how should I find local or regional keywords?

My 2nd question about parameters you given in last post for country specific search.
&cr=[COUNTRYCODE] when I put &cr=us at the end of Google search so results come same using or without using this parameter.
  • You can get your site to appear on google local search, if you are legitimately building a website for a business that is actually in that locality. Just check out google local search and register the website with it, and give the full address of the business.

check out here: http://www.google.com/local/add/businessCenter?pli=1 for some resources.

If however you are not actually based in the locality, then you probably want to be creating content that targets [keyword] + [location]. ie. pages about [BMW Dealer North LA & Hollywood], or [BMW dealer south central] etc.
  • Your answer is great but I want one suggestion regarding Keyword Research. I need your suggestion that how to search local business keyword or global website keyword.

I always confuse to find best keywords for local and global websites. So please provide me great guidance to find best keywords in term of traffic generation and good position in Google.

thats a whole different topic for a different thread...

Why not just brainstorm some ideas, and launch a small ppc campaign to find out what works best for you?
  • This threads all about for keyword research and competitive analysis. So we can discuss this topic in this thread but if you want so I can create new thread for keyword brainstorming specifically.

You said in earlier post that we can start small PPC campaign to get best keywords but I think we need keywords as well to start PPC campaign.

So it is true that in start we should do brainstorming but we do find research through keyword tool to see the traffic coming against the any selected keyword. So how should we analysis the best keyword for our business through keyword research through keyword tool and competitive analysis with other related websites.

I know that brainstorming does matter but a suitable keyword for any website must return good traffic. So should we follow the keyword tools data or we should create our own keyword which will relevant to our website but perhaps people do not make any search through this keyword.
  • I dont know which is a good tool to find the keywords that are more used to a product or service in certain location. But generally people search with for example auto dealer near los angeles or your zip. Then come the modifications like used cars los angeles, used cars deales in los angeles and so on.
You can spy on your competition to find what they are using as keywords, also i just checked alexa today. It shows you what keywords has better results for some websites. i dont know if they have to be registered or not.
  • you should check competitive analysis than after select keywords for your website.

    Hi robin,
I want to know that how can we check competitive analysis so that we can get better seo results for our site.
  • You can give a try to Google Trends, Insight and Adword tool.
  • In my point of view first check in google, yahoo and msn which sites come on this keyword "Los Angeles".Take top 5 sites and check which keywords they targets and than check all these keywords in Google adwords & for doing competitor analysis you can use " link: site URL" in yahoo. It shows all backlinks of your competitor sites.
  • For doing the competitor analysis first of all set the alert on google.
Second track the back links of your competitor with the help oh yahoo and analyse them. If you don't have your site link there than try to place your link over there.
  • A good keyword tool filters information based on geographic and linguistic parameters. You want to see what people are searching for in the markets you are actively pursuing, not in the countries or languages that you do not or cannot service.
Google search based keyword tool (SBKT) is very similar to the AdWords keyword tool but the keyword suggestions there don't fully overlap so it's a good idea to use both the tools. All the keyword suggestions you get with SBKT are neatly arranged into various categories which makes grouping and managing keyword lists much easier. Here you'll also see the search volumes for each keyword.
