You can check traffic from google webmaster tools also. Webmaster tools give exact details about traffic on your website.

For other sites you can't really get accurate stats on their traffic, the best tool would be Alexa as mentioned but that data shouldn't be read in to too much.

As for getting data on your own site, or client sites, I'd say Google Analytics. If you're looking for something more detailed in regards to live data search for Woopra.
