  Quite honestly and from an SEO perspective the best use of social bookmarking is to target inner pages of your site that would normally compete for longer tail search terms. I'd also add I like to use them as one of the starting points of link building and roll them out for each keyword in a campaign say a few times a year.

  Agreed for the indexing purposes, haven't seen great data in the analytics I have access to for referral traffic but they can't most definitely get you well ranked for longer tail or niche search terms. From there you need to build better links and re-visit the social bookmarks occasionally.
