Is social media optimization really works to rank a website?

Social media network is the most accessing one and i think it can promote a site easily....
but what my doubt is, is tat really works in ranking a page high...

    Yes, social media helps in ranking the page high. because you get the traffic from different ip's that will be helpful for google ranking.

    in my view,through social media optimisation we can generate traffic but there may be less improvement in page rank. google consider valid back links for awarding page rank.through social media we can get back links but they are not considered as valid back links.
    but in terms of traffic generation and alexa rank improvement social media optimisation is best method.
