Generating backlinks by Submitting to Web Directories

Hello
I am working on SEO for my website and trying to discover web directories which have good ranking that would help to get backlinks.I found a few sites on the internet viz Dmoz, webdirectory etc. Now,I am not sure how much of these directories would actually help as they are available for free.

Hence I would like to have some advice and pointers from forum members regarding such directories that would be helpful. Also, their experience regarding increasing the rank for their site would be helpful.

Thanks

Directory submissions are good, but also be careful where you post them. most of them are now saturated with spammers. If you are interested in a new powerful backlink..check my latest thread

Google are devaluating web directories, since most are only used for spammy article submission.

Web Directories are ok if you stick to the higher quality ones out there. Once you have exhausted these move on to other link building resources as directories really are a starting point for link building, keep in mind they are helpful for creating citations for your Google Places listing. Article directories are of course different and as Folmand said, they have been getting devalued, if you stick to the top ones and actually add a good quality article they still offer some value, again though, another basic link building technique, exhaust them then starting building links based on quality and relevance!
