  a lot of sites have already experienced a drop in rankings because of this. I'm currently trying out different things.
  Seems like 1 big square at the top and your content starting next to it... + add in the sidebar is still ok. (although quite 'top heavy')

  I wonder how Google determines if the content above the fold are ads or content? I mean what if it's just a graphic carousel that looks like an add in terms of code?

  good question... it probably uses some sort of filter for links to the major ad networks like adsense, adbrite, etc.
  So you'll be probably safe with ads you sell yourself.
