From what I've seen, both on Google search and others, is that no one is really sure about the answer to this question regarding directories. Obviously there are numerous opinions about this, but none offering concrete facts.
However, what I did discover was that Google is definitely searching for duplicate content within the article directories themselves. And for all the obvious reasons. As for links coming to your site from directories, again, they're only as good as the directories themselves. Focus on the top 2 or 3 and forget the rest.
If you stick with creating high-quality, unique content to your end user (readers) - that provides them with something of value and helps solve their problems, then let Google or whoever do as they wish. You will still come out on top in the end.
That is not true, am sure Google just banned a few article directories that approves spam articles or Google deemed them as unworthy and reduced their pagerank. While submiting the articles, just get a few decent article directories instead of a thousand spam directories.
