There is no need for W3C validation if you are referring to ranking. Google itself does not validates. It's a matter of not having severe error that prevent your pages from rendering correctly. But if the pages renders OK (You might check with Google webmaster tools that Google bot can fetch the page) and there are no severe errors or problems that may prevent the site appear OK in all browsers - You will be fine.

As said before, there is no need for W3C validation BUT how can you be certain? Google only tells you only so much, they even could be lying.
Well, when you have time, try to make your site validate. You might get nothing out of it, but you can never know. Maybe Google decides one day that W3C valid sites should be ranked higher...

As said W3C validation is not necessary to be indexed nor does it affect rankings, per say. However, if you consider that usability and accessibility contribute to metrics such as load time, bounce rate, which are used in the ranking algorithms, having a site with as few errors as possible is only going to help your cause.
Think of it this way, there's a lot of things you can choose not to do because they don't provide much benefit to your rankings but if you ensure you do every possible thing right, it all adds up to better performance in the search engines...
