Google's Panda Update is a search filter introduced in February 2011 meant to stop sites with poor quality content from working their way into Google's top search results. Panda is updated from time-to-time. When this happens, sites previously hit may escape, if they've made the right changes.

Named after a Google employee, the 'Panda' or 'Farmer' update was developed to further eradicate sites of poor or no quality from their index. And without publication, it has been strongly suggested that several versions of the 'Panda' have been released since February.

It is an opinion that Panda is a ranking factor, as opposed to an algorithmic shift, as Google have battled to remove poor websites, and link farming sites from their index since 1997.

Sites with quality, unique and contributing content should not have been directly impacted, however any links that are seen to be from dubious resources, such as low quality directories or bad neighbourhoods, have seen a significant drop in their natural positions.

There are many, many resources across the internet that detail the recent update, and how and what can be done to ensure that your website is not negatively effected.

Google Panda is a change to Google's search results ranking algorithm that was first released in February 2011. The change aimed to lower the rank of "low-quality sites" or "thin sites", in particular "content farms", and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results.
